Galls play a crucial role as indicators of environmental changes, with their diversity easily influenced by both the 'top-down' and 'bottom-up' cascade effects and the diversity of host plants. These insects are associated with modifications in the morphology and anatomy of plants, resulting in hypertrophy (abnormal increase in cell volume) and/or hyperplasia (abnormal increase in the number of cells) in the organs and tissues of host plants. They exhibit high specificity towards their host plants. Melastomataceae is one of the most important families in the Neotropical flora, known for hosting a high diversity of galls. In this context, the study aimed to review gall richness in the Melastomataceae family, comprehensively analyzing the main plant species within the family and their primary inducers. The review was conducted by searching for relevant scientific articles from different databases such as the Coordenação de Aperfeiçoamento de Pessoal de Nível Superior (Capes) Periodicals Portal, ProQuest, SciELO, Scopus, SPELL, and Springer Science databases from November 2022 to July 2023. The results obtained offer a broad characterization of galls present in the family, along with data showing the genus Miconia Ruiz & Pavón to have the highest abundance (42,53%) and richness (n=15) of galls. The Cecidomyiidae family (Diptera) (39,71%) stood out for gall-inducing insects. The literature analysis reveals a significant increase in the number of articles dedicated to gall richness in this family. There is continuous growth in research, with important studies conducted in various world regions.Downloads
