Praia Grande is one of the beaches that make up the island of Caratateua (or Outeiro), located in the Coastal Zone of Pará, and it is a very popular beach among the public on vacations and long holidays. This study aimed to evaluate the presence of microplastics in four points on the sand strip of Praia Grande. Beach sand was collected on April 2, 2023, and was transported to the Environmental Chemistry Laboratory, a supersaturated sodium chloride solution was used to extract the microplastic from the sand, and using a magnifying glass, the microplastics were identified and counted. The weight of microplastics was also estimated in the work. The presence of microplastics was confirmed in the four points in the form of filaments or fragments, in the colors blue, red, black, brown, and white (or transparent), accounting for a total of 362 microplastics. It is inferred that the occurrence of microplastics in Praia Grande is due to improper disposal and physical factors that decompose plastic materials into tiny particles (such as the action of waves and winds). The occurrence of microplastics on beaches such as Big Beach is an emerging environmental problem that requires greater knowledge from the scientific community and governments. The concern with this topic involves the slow decomposition of microplastics, and their bioavailability for consumption by different organisms, which can be contaminated by toxic substances absorbed and transferred by these microparticles.Downloads
