Abstract

The Author presents a brief study of the phytogeography of Pernambuco.He divides the state into four phytogeographic zones: littoral, forest, caatingaand savanna. The first zone (littoral) is sub–divided into a) maritime, b) seashore; c) restingas and coastal terraces, d) mangrove sub–zones. The second(forests) includes a) humid forest, b) dry forest, and c) tropical mountainforest sub–zones. The caatinga zone is sub–divided into two sub–zones: a)agreste and b) sertão. The sertão, by its turn, is sub–divided into 5 regions: a)central sertão; b) sandstone plateaux; c) sertão of the São Francisco river; d)sertão of Jatinã; e) sertão of the Araripe. The last zone (savannas) has twosub–zones: a) tabuleiros and b) agrestes of the Araripe. For all these zones,sub–zones and regions the Author gives the most characteristic species andsome general information.
