Scientific Prospecting on Rainwater Harvesting for Human Consumption: An Analysis of Academic Study Trends.
Keywords:
drinking water, water resources, systematic reviewAbstract
In this study, we conduct a systematic review of rainwater harvesting for human consumption, aiming to identify key trends, challenges, and research gaps in the field. A total of 260 articles from the Web of Science database, published between 2014 and 2024, were analyzed and categorized into themes including water quality, collection systems, storage, treatment, purification, first-flush diverters, and social technology. The findings indicate that most studies focus on water quality assessment and the efficiency of collection and treatment systems, underscoring concerns regarding water security and the feasibility of rainwater utilization. In contrast, aspects related to storage and first-flush diversion devices remain relatively underexplored. This synthesis highlights the need for standardized analytical methods and technological innovations that integrate cost-effective, low-maintenance solutions. By advancing knowledge in sustainable rainwater management, this study supports future research and informs public policies aimed at enhancing water security in diverse climatic contexts.Downloads
