Methods for domestic water treatment for human consumption: a bibliometric and systematic analysis
Keywords:
água potável, abastecimento de água, qualidade da água, desinfecção, Escherichia coliAbstract
Water is an indispensable resource for quality of life and human well-being, and its universal access has been expanded through various technologies aimed at water treatment. To gain a better understanding of these methods, this study aimed to conduct a systematic review and bibliometric analysis of systems and techniques used for domestic water treatment for human consumption over the past five years (January 2020 to February 2025). The study was developed in four stages, comprising data collection, selection, and analysis, as well as the review and discussion of articles that met the screening criteria. The Scopus and Web of Science databases were chosen for research, and the Bibliometrix package was used for analysis. The results identified 152 articles related to the researched topic, published in 65 journals, with 2021 being the most representative year in terms of quantity. The journals Science of the Total Environment and Water Research had frequent publications related to domestic water treatment and were also the most prominent in terms of citations. The United States and China had the highest number of publications; however, Brazil and the United Kingdom gained more prominence in terms of citations. The keyword clouds revealed trends in terms related to the articles, especially regarding the fecal contamination indicator Escherichia coli. Among the most prevalent domestic water treatment methods identified in this study were slow sand filters, membrane filtration, ceramic filters and adsorption, disinfection methods, solar disinfection, and other combined approaches. This study contributes by addressing aspects of domestic water treatment, providing guidance for future research and serving as a basis for recent scientific productionsDownloads
