Ectoparasitism by Phthiraptera in birds is permanent and it is influenced by factors such as temperature, humidity, susceptibility and behavior. The present study aimed to describe the occurrence of chewing lice present in Theristicus caudatus (Boddaert, 1783), a bird known as Buff-necked Ibis, in the municipality of Tomazina, southern Brazil. The bird was found dead and collected, under authorization No. 57685-1, for activities with scientific purposes, and was taken to the university to be incorporated into the biological collection. The accidentally dead animal was inspected for ectoparasites. The specimens found were observed under optical microscopy and identified according to their morphological characteristics. The species identified were Ardeicola theristicus (Pessoa and Guimarães, 1935), Colpocephalum trispinum (Piaget, 1885) and Plegadiphilus mamillatus (Piaget, 1885). This is the first record of the three species in the state of Paraná and also the first record of P. mamillatus and A. theristicus in southern Brazil.Downloads
