Leishmaniasis, a parasitic disease caused by protozoa of the genus Leishmania, can also affect guinea pigs (Cavia porcellus). In these animals, infection occurs by Leishmania (Mundinia) enriettii, a non-zoonotic species. Despite the range of studies conducted since its first description in 1948, there are few reports of effective treatments for the species. Thus, the objective of this work was to report a case of cutaneous leishmaniasis in a Cavia porcellus using conchectomy and homeopathic medicines as therapy. The animal had an ulcerated nodular lesion in the left ear and cytological examination indicated the presence of amastigotes of Leishmania spp. The supportive treatment that is normally recommended in these situations was ineffective. Therefore, it was decided to perform conchectomy, with the use of analgesics and antibiotic therapy in the postoperative period, as well as the homeopathic Antimonium crudum 6CH and Echinacea angustifolia 6CH. The treatment demonstrated effectiveness in reducing clinical signs and there were no relapses after 8 months of the procedure, at which point the animal died suddenly, due to an unknown cause (no necropsy was performed).Downloads
