Abstract

Sanitizing fertile eggs is essential to ensure a successful incubation. However, conventional methods may pose risks to human and animal health, as well as to the environment. In this context, the search for alternative methods has become increasingly necessary. This study aimed to investigate the effects of essential oils of vetiver grass (Chrysopogon zizanioides), lemongrass (Cymbopogon citratus), and French lavender (Lavandula dentata) on fertile eggs, focusing on the hatchability of fertile eggs and chick quality. A total of 200 eggs from Cobb® broiler breeder hens were incubated and randomly assigned to five treatments: non-sanitized eggs, eggs sanitized with grain alcohol (96%), and eggs treated with 1% diluted essential oils of vetiver grass, lemongrass, and French lavender. The experiment was performed with a randomized block design, totaling five treatments and four replicates per group. Rates of hatchability of fertile eggs among the treatments were 72,00 ± 5,5% (vetiver grass), 75,00 ± 4,9% (lemongrass), 85,71 ± 3,7% (French lavender), 72,73 ± 6,0% (non-sanitized), and 63,64 ± 5,8% (grain alcohol). Regarding chick quality, assessed using the Pasgar© score method, the group treated with French lavender essential oil stood out, with a score of 8,96 ± 0,74. Overall, the essential oils improved the evaluated parameters, with L. dentata standing out for promoting significant zootechnical gains, providing new perspectives for the use of natural products in the sanitary management of incubation. The results reinforce the relevance of strategies aimed at replacing conventional sanitizers with alternatives aligned with current demands of animal production.
