Abstract

Brachycephalic syndrome is characterized by partial obstruction of the cranial respiratory tract in brachycephalic animals, caused by conformational abnormalities of the soft palate, nostrils, and trachea, which are considered primary alterations. These may lead to a series of clinical signs and morphofunctional changes in different organ systems, resulting in secondary alterations, such as those that can occur in the gastrointestinal tract of brachycephalic animals. Therefore, it is important to analyze what veterinarians and pet owners know about this condition. Thus, the objective of this study was to assess the level of knowledge of pet owners and veterinarians regarding gastrointestinal alterations in brachycephalic animals. Through online questionnaires, 131 responses were obtained from brachycephalic dog owners and 140 from veterinarians from different regions of Brazil. Most owners indicated that they understood what the syndrome is but were unaware that it could cause gastrointestinal alterations. Similarly, veterinarians know what brachycephaly and the syndrome are; however, many are unaware of the involvement of the gastroenteric system. Although most reports routinely treat patients with disorders in this system, vomiting being the most common, many do not associate these alterations with the syndrome, indicating the need for continuing education and professional improvement on this topic.
