The spleen is the largest organ of the lymphatic system, located in the left hypogastric region. Primary splenic torsion (ST) is a rare condition in which the spleen rotates around its ligaments, more commonly occurring secondarily to gastric dilatation-volvulus syndrome (GDV). Its cause is not well understood and may be related to weakness of the ligaments, being more common in large dogs with deep chests. This report describes a case of primary ST in a 10-year-old Pit Bull, presenting with apathy and abdominal distension, who underwent a splenectomy. The diagnosis was made through ultrasonography with color Doppler, which revealed a "C" shaped spleen and absence of venous flow in the organ. Treatment involved patient stabilization and total splenectomy without untwisting the rotated vascular pedicle, thus preventing toxin release. A good prognosis was achieved due to rapid diagnosis and surgical intervention.Downloads
